The first Breeders’ Cup Championship was run in 1984 at Hollywood Park, and the first Classic was won by the longshot (31-1), Wild Again. It was a highly contested race, including a stewards’ inquiry.

Wild Again would go on to stud eventually standing at Three Chimneys Farm in Versailles, Kentucky. His Breeders’ Cup legacy would come full circle in 2014 with Bayern’s victory in the year’s Classic. You can visit Three Chimneys and visit with 2017 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and current leading sire, Gun Runner.

What started as an idea for an international racing event with John Gaines, pictured here, would become the Breeders’ Cup Championship. Read more about the history of the Breeders’ Cup here.

Mr. Gaines was a prominent owner and breeder, purchasing part of the old Whitney Farm and rechristening it to Gainesway Farm. He operated Gainesway from 1974 to 1989, and specially designed the stallion facilities. You can tour Gainesway on Friday’s this fall and see leading sire Tapit as well as Breeders’ Cup connections, Karakontie and Spun to Run.

The Breeders’ Cup returns home again to Keeneland! As the heart of Thoroughbred breeding, it’s a thrill to have the world championships back in Lexington. This will be Keeneland’s third time as host of the Breeders’ Cup – though it’s hard to count 2020 as there were few spectators on site.

Keeneland is offering tours leading up to and during Breeders’ Cup week, where you can see behind the scenes of racing and training equine athletes.

Not all Thoroughbred racehorses go on to breeding careers after they finish racing. While Zenyatta was a Breeders’ Cup Champion herself, two of her sons retired from racing and began successful jumping careers. Pictured here is Zenyatta’s first foal, Cozmic One, by the late Bernardini, competing in this year’s Real Rider Cup. On board is Hidden Brook Farm’s Sergio de Sousa, whose daughter Isabela, retrained Cozmic One into his new career off-the-track. Watch this video to learn more about his transition.
